Addict chopped flatmate
A MAN attacked his flatmate with a chopper after accusing him of stealing his heroin, the District Court heard yesterday.
Li Kwong, 39, was jailed for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to wounding Chau Sau-fu.
Prosecutor William Tam said Li and Mr Chau had been flatmates at Yu Chau Street, Shamshuipo.
The attack happened on March 5 after Li approached Mr Chau over some missing heroin. Judge Muttrie was told that although Mr Chau denied having the drug, Li became enraged and hit him with the chopper.
In the attack Mr Chau tried to ward off the chopper with his hands.
Li then ran away but gave himself up to police 40 minutes later. Mr Chau was taken to Caritas Medical Centre with a 10-centimetre cut to his thigh and deep wounds to his hands.
Defence solicitor Patrick Chow said Li, a food hawker, was suffering from withdrawal symptoms at the time of the offence and had lost control of himself.
Mr Chow said Li had been taking the drug twice a day.
He added that Li was disabled after trapping his arm in a machine at work 25 years ago.
He said the two men got on each other's nerves and had been on bad terms for some time.
