THE Government yesterday said the public should not overreact to the retirement of senior civil servants.
The call followed news that Social Welfare Department assistant directors Anthony Chan Wai-kwan and Patricia Chu Yeung Pak-yu would retire next year.
After the Legislative Council's public services panel meeting, Deputy Secretary for the Civil Service Christopher Jackson said: 'Cases we have seen recently are officers who reach normal retirement age and who have chosen to exercise their right to retire.
'The important thing is that we make sure our staff succession plan is carefully [drawn up], by spotting the right talents and giving them sufficient training,' he said.
Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang said the decisions were a 'normal development'.
'I don't think this in itself is anything very surprising and we are confident that we are giving younger officers every opportunity to be trained; to get exposure and a variety of experience,' she said.
