A DEMOCRATIC Party attempt to lower the proposed sewage charge for domestic users is unacceptable, the Government has said. The proposed charging structure for sewage disposal is to be put to the Legislative Council today. Officials say the scheme will mean 50 per cent of households will pay less than $8 a month, and 85 per cent less than $18. However, the Reverend Fung Chi-wood will today propose the rate be reduced. He says it would create a financial burden for the poor. The Government said if Mr Fung's motion were carried, the administration would lose $100 million a year. The Legislative Council's legal adviser said Mr Fung's amendment would be open to challenge in the courts. He said there was no distinction between domestic and non-domestic consumers as regards the prescribed rate of sewage charge.
