CIVIL servants will continue to work a 51/2-day week because they follow the practice in the private sector, Acting Secretary for the Civil Service Chris Jackson said. A survey in 1994 showed that 31 per cent of private-sector companies required their staff to work 51/2 days a week and another 21 per cent worked either 101/2 or 11-day fortnights. 'We remain of the view that the Government should follow rather than lead private sector practice. We also believe that many of the people we serve continue to expect government offices to be open on Saturdays,' Mr Jackson said.
