SENIOR Chinese official Zhang Junsheng yesterday attacked Christine Loh Kung-wai's motion on the activities of the Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong as 'ignorant and stupid'. Mr Zhang said: 'She does not understand China's political structure. How Hong Kong will be run after 1997 is already spelled out in the Basic Law. Doesn't she know that? 'As a Legislative Council member, she should not waste the taxpayers' money, discussing a silly topic that seeks to interfere with the affairs of Hong Kong after 1997,' he said. Mr Zhang, vice-director of Xinhua (the New China News Agency), said Legco had no power to interfere with the affairs of Hong Kong after 1997. Governor Chris Patten defended officials' silence in the debate. 'I think we have quite enough to do answering questions about things for which we are responsible without branching out in the speculative and exotic way as we are invited to do.'
