COPIES of a magazine with a nude picture of the Virgin Mary on the cover were among 53 obscene publications seized when police raided a newspaper stall, Eastern Court heard yesterday. Inside the magazine were nude pictures of Jesus Christ and Adam and Eve, magistrate Yung Yiu-wing was told. Also seized were sexually explicit books and other obscene magazines. Hawker Wong Kwai-che, 43, and his employee, Sher Dhillon Singh, 26, both admitted the allegations. Wong was caught on April 25 when a police inspector disguised himself as a customer and obtained two obscene magazines from the stall in Lockhart Road, Wan Chai. The police then seized the stall and discovered the other publications. The hawker said after the hearing that he had not read the magazines because they were all sealed in plastic bags although he knew the books were for adults. He said the books were 20 per cent of his profit. Wong admitted possessing an obscene article for the purpose of publication and was fined $3,000. Singh pleaded guilty to publishing an obscene article. He was fined $1,000.
