The nation's consul-in-charge in the territory, Krzysztof Ciebien, hopes to establish the classical musical group as a tribute to the 18th century composer Fryderyk Chopin.

Some of Hong Kong's most renowned scholars of music from Hong Kong University, the Chinese University and the Academy for Performing Arts are being invited to discuss the founding of the society.

Prominent among them will be Professor Li Ming-qiang of the Baptist College, who, in 1953, performed in Poland's annual International Chopin Piano Competition.

He is also a juror at this year's event which will be staged in November.

Asian musicians seem to have an inherent affinity with Chopin. Past winners of the international competition have come from China, Japan and Vietnam.
