THE Hong Kong women's hockey squad are hoping to use this week's Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia, as a way of gaining recognition from the Sports Development Board (SDB).
Goalkeeper Elizabeth Irons feels the squad is one of the strongest women's teams to leave Hong Kong shores.
'There is not really that much money for women's hockey in Hong Kong,' said Irons, who has played at Scottish county level.
'That's why we want to do well, to show the SDB that we are worthy of getting financial support.' The players in the squad have an impressive pedigree with most having played at provincial level in Scotland, Australia or South Africa.
Vice-captain Cynthia Field, defender Peta Cullum and Adi Glancy have had vast experience in international hockey for Hong Kong, with Cullum back in the territory after a spell in Australia.
The hockey competition features eight teams divided into two groups of four.
