FOUR new postgraduate courses at City University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will be unveiled at the fair.

  The courses, starting later this year, will bring to 25 the number of postgraduate degrees at CUHK.

      The new degrees were being offered by different faculties and the programmes reflected the university's commitment to expanding course range, said Aman Shah, CUHK's associate academic secretary.

  Masters degrees in Chinese comparative law, international business management, linguistics and environmental science and technology already had attracted many students, he said.

  Prospective students could enrol in three of the courses at the fair and get information on course structures.

  'All our courses are practical and offer students skills they will be able to use as soon as they leave the university,' Mr Shah said.

  'The number, range and modes of our postgraduate courses is unique in Hong Kong. They have given the university a reputation for offering professional, practical and versatile postgraduate studies.'   The new master of law in Chinese and comparative law courses had sparked great interest as many law graduates wanted to update skills before 1997, Mr Shah said.

  Although the deadline for applications for the masters degree, the first in Hong Kong, was last month, information about course structure would be available at the fair.

  'Even before the deadline, the course was well subscribed because it meets a need in the local market for lawyers and will train students for jobs after 1997,' Mr Shah said.

  'Our range of taught postgraduate courses are designed mainly for local graduate students and all are part-time, except for the postgraduate certificate in law, which is one year full-time.'   The Faculty of Business had a huge response after incorporating its postgraduate diploma in international business management with a master of arts degree, Mr Shah said.

  The course would give Hong Kong entrepreneurs skills to develop and manage business strategies in an international context, he said.

  It would investigate Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian business practices.

   'Postgraduates need to be well versed in regional business matters,' Mr Shah said.

  'The course will give them a broad idea of Asian management structures and prepare them to manage international business transactions.

  'We expect it will be popular with graduates from joint ventures, multinational companies and private or state enterprises.'   Information about the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences' new postgraduate course also will be available.

  The faculty offers six postgraduate courses, including the new four-semester master of arts in linguistics, a part-time course in Chinese, translation and linguistics.

  The course is linked to a postgraduate diploma in linguistics with a dissertation in the final year.

  'Hong Kong is a bilingual community facing substantial political and social changes over the next decade and the course has attracted a lot of attention,' Mr Shah said.

  'Students will get a solid grounding as language professionals and will have the basis for going on to do linguistics doctorates or a master of philosophy.'   The university's new master of science in environmental science and technology also had practical applications for students, Mr Shah said.

  Technological developments in pollution control and legislation would be addressed in the two-and-a-half year part-time course over five semesters.

  Toxicology and effects on humans would be part of the course, which would end with a dissertation.

  The university hoped to attract foreign students to its research degree programmes, Mr Shah said.

  'Overseas students improve the quality of research, bringing in different views and opinions and widening our students' research culture and horizons,' he said.

  The new Student Academic Exchange Centre, to be completed next year, will be an incentive to foreign research students.

  Residence for more than 100 overseas students will be available in the building, adjacent to the university's Tat Chee Avenue site in Kowloon Tong.

  Administrative staff from the School of Graduate Studies and academic staff teaching postgraduate research and degree courses will answer questions.

  Course materials, degree structures, tuition, duration, and other general information are available.

  Staff from many institutes represented at the fair have scheduled seminars about courses.

   Students wanting information about courses can attend a seminar on Saturday at 3 pm.

  Mr Shah said the university emphasised practical application and applied research.

  'Although the institute has always emphasised practical courses and training students to meet community needs, our research courses are gaining in popularity,' he said.



CUHK offers more options for research
