ONE of the most comprehensive and expensive distance learning degrees is on offer from the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) along with several other postgraduate programmes.

   The HKMA will provide details of six postgraduate degrees at the fair.

  Among these is the popular Master of Business Administration (MBA) course offered in conjunction with the British University of Warwick.

  Taught in three parts, the Warwick MBA costs GBP2,250 (about HK$27,600) for each stage, with an additional GBP1,150 for the project dissertation on completion.

  'This degree is really worth it because students have to meet the same strict requirements as those undertaking study in Britain,' said Leung Wing Chun-wing, the HKMA public relations manager.

  'The course takes three-and-a-half years and payment can be stretched over that time, so the total of GBP7,900 is not a great deal.

  'There are many MBA programmes offered in Hong Kong that can be completed in a year but they are not as comprehensive as the Warwick degree.'      The MBA covers 12 specialised areas, including financial accounting, market analysis, marketing management, global business and manufacturing strategies.

  Warwick students were given special consideration for loans from the British-based University Funding Council (UFC), Mr Leung said.

 Another advantage of MBAs from Warwick is recognition from the Association of Master of Business Administration.

       Details about a September briefing seminar for those considering studying at Warwick will be available.

   HKMA also offers distance learning and part-time MBA programmes from Australia's Macquarie University and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).

  Macquarie, one of the country's best business schools, was chosen by HKMA as it was able to tailor courses for Hong Kong students, Mr Leung said.

  Courses in marketing management, human resource management and information technology management consisted of eight subjects over three, six-month semesters. The first two semesters each costs $30,900 and the third $20,600.

   People from all walks of life took marketing management courses, while the most specialised, a course in human resources, had attracted some of Hong Kong's top company directors, Mr Leung said.

  Besides the MBA from Warwick, HKMA offers an international business management postgraduate degree at RMIT.

  The course is jointly offered and organised with the Singapore Institute of Management, the Malaysian Management Association and the Asian Association of Management.

  Students enrol at their local institute, which teaches the international syllabus.

  The two-year programme includes a regional seminar where all students meet at one of the campuses before a final convention in Australia in the second year.

  Topics include regional government policies, tax structures, financial and banking systems and administration in the different countries.

  'This MBA course has been more popular than we expected and, in the first year, there were 15 enrolments from Hong Kong,' Mr Leung said.

  'Another advantage of the regional programme is that it is portable and business executives relocating to Singapore or Malaysia can continue studies there.'   In addition, the HKMA offers information about a two-year Master of Finance degree course, which costs $24,900 a semester.

  The programme was one of the most popular at the RMIT and was ideal for those who hoped to enter Hong Kong's finance sector, Mr Leung said.

  Forex trading, risk management, money markets and other related topics are covered. And a project on current issues gives the course a local flavour.
