BUILDERS preparing three replacement ferry piers on the Central reclamation are facing an uphill task to get two of them ready for opening by Tuesday.

A 20-strong team of legislators yesterday visited the site after concerns that technical problems would delay the opening date.

The team found that in the gangway area for the pier to Cheung Chau and Mui Wo, there was not enough space for people using the lower deck to get on and off the ferries without hitting their heads on a steel beam supporting the ramp above.

Contractors also need to complete road access, pavements and the covered pedestrian walkway.

'A great deal of work has been done, but there is still a lot of work to do,' said Secretary for Works, James Blake.

He said yesterday that fire services and buildings department personnel would inspect the piers today.
