CYCLIST Wong Kam-po, who booked himself a ticket for the 1996 Olympic Games with a third-placed finish at the Asian Championships in the Philippines this week, is determined to help his teammates go to Atlanta.

The top five riders in the individual road race at the Asian event each earned a berth in the Olympics line-up and qualifying with Wong were two Japanese, a Taiwanese and a Kazakhstan rider.

But the 'major' qualifier would be October's World Championships in Colombia in which the top 34 riders by country will each win five tickets to Atlanta for their national team.

'Qualifying for the Olympics is an inspiration in itself and it also gives me a more positive goal in my cycling career,' said Wong on his return from the Philippines on Thursday night.

'But my immediate aim is to win a place for the Hong Kong team at the Atlanta Games, and that would be to finish high up the rankings at the World Championships.' Wong attributed his success at the Asian Championships to the well-planned preparation which saw Hong Kong being the first team to arrive in Subic Bay.

The Hong Kong squad went directly to Subic Bay two weeks before their scheduled race to acclimatise and train on the actual course while the other countries were in Manila for the track events.
