FORMER Jardines taipan Sir Michael Herries has died in Scotland aged 72 after a short illness. Sir Michael, who had a distinguished career in Hong Kong and across East Asia, was a member of the Executive and Legislative Councils in the 1960s. Last night former Governor Lord Wilson said Sir Michael was 'one of the great Hong Kong post-war figures'. Educated at Eton and Cambridge, Sir Michael served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in Europe and the Middle East during World War II, winning the Military Cross before travelling to Hong Kong to join Jardines in 1948. He was managing director, or taipan, between 1963 and 1970. He was awarded the OBE in 1968 and knighted in 1975.
