A WARM, dry summer with lots of sunshine is the only hope for polluted beaches, according to a report released yesterday.

'There is very little change in water quality anticipated over the summer and what happens basically depends on the weather,' Environmental Protection Department principal officer Malcolm Broom said.

'The grading of some beaches fluctuates during the summer. In most cases, this represents a natural fluctuation as rain and tides bring more or less pollution.

'Beaches with highly developed hinterlands are likely to be more polluted after heavy rain.' A bi-weekly grading scale will be announced during the bathing season.

In the past two weeks, Big Wave Bay, Golden Beach and Kadoorie improved from poor to fair, and Deep Water Bay, Clear Water Bay 2nd Beach, Pui O and Tung Wan on Cheung Chau fell from good to fair.
