THE wealth of taipans Sir John and Sir Adrian Swire has fallen by GBP421 million (about HK$5.1 billion) over the past year, according to The Sunday Times list of the 500 wealthiest people in Britain. Nonetheless the brothers, who head John Swire and Sons, still have GBP770 million between them and rank as eighth richest in the country. The report, published annually, says the company continues to power ahead despite the looming threat of 1997. It values the company at about GBP1.2 billion, which puts the 60 per cent Swire family interest at GBP762 million. 'We add a conservative GBP8 million for other family assets, making the family worth GBP770 million, a severely downgraded figure reflecting the lower values assigned to private companies this year,' it said. Hong Kong's other taipans, Henry and Simon Keswick, come in at joint 21st in the list with wealth estimated at GBP400 million, down from GBP550 million last year. The report says: 'As 1997 looms the Keswick family, with about 10 per cent of Jardine Matheson, appears to be looking elsewhere for business opportunities.'
