TO COMMEND the participation of performing artists in voluntary service, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and the Agency for Volunteer Service launched the 'Ten Most Distinguished Stars Volunteer Recognition Campaign' recently. Nominations of performing artists who participated in social service last year are invited from recognised social service organisations in Hong Kong from now until October 1. 'I believe people can feel our love and concern in small ways, for example, just by giving a seat to an elderly person and a helping hand to handicapped people,' said pop star Andy Lau Tak-wah at the opening ceremony. In view of the good responses in the last two years, RTHK has decided to spread the campaign to Guangdong province and Macau, and rename it as the 'Ten Most Distinguished Stars Volunteer Recognition Campaign for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau'. The first major activity will be the 'Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau United Operation for Community Service' to be held on May 27 and 28. On these days, the organisers will form a team of performing artists, a love camera team and volunteers. 'They will make a trip to Panyu and Macau to visit the single elderly and disabled people with local volunteers and exchange their experiences in volunteer service,' said Mr Tsang. Last year, the 'Morning Suite Services Bus' a voluntary service fully supported by the Kowloon Motor Bus Company provided travelling services to artists for their visits. This year, the bus will continue its service and will be used to provide voluntary service once a month. 'We hope the campaign will boost the development of voluntary service and mutual care among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau,'said Mr Tsang. Although the emphasis of this year's campaign is on the co-operation among the above-mentioned areas, RTHK has promised to gather strength from Hong Kong's showbiz stars to work for Canada's 'British Columbia Children's Hospital Love Campaign '95'. The campaign will be broadcast jointly by Canadian Chinese Radio and Overseas Chinese Voice to call on the local overseas Chinese to reinforce their commitment by donating money.
