THE British United Provident Association, or BUPA, knows the importance of providing medical benefits to employees in Hong Kong.

The group provides corporate medical cover for companies with from five to 1,000 employees.

BUPA covers about 1,500 companies with medical insurance and about 38,000 individual customers are covered by plans such as BUPA Care and BUPA Gold.

BUPA's Company Care Plan caters to groups. Policies are tailored to individual companies' particular needs.

Peter Kong, director of sales and marketing for BUPA, estimated that about 30 per cent of the Hong Kong workforce was covered by the industry. The coverage rate had remained about the same for the last few years, he said.

He said all big companies in Hong Kong carried medical insurance for their staff. People without health insurance generally worked in small companies of between two and 20 employees.

These employees looked after their own medical bills and were not a target market for BUPA.
