I REFER to the letter from Alan Stroud, of Sha Tin Heights, which appeared in these columns on April 28, complaining of the danger and nuisance of container vehicles using Tai Po Road.
I live at the other end of Tai Po Road and I fully endorse his comments.
Tai Po Road is too small to accommodate these huge lorries and a weight restriction should be imposed to force these vehicles to use the Shing Mun tunnel. That was, after all, one of the main reasons that the tunnel was built.
I would like to ask the Government to reply in this page to two questions. Firstly, how many people have died in accidents along Tai Po Road in recent years (I am aware of at least three fatalities which have involved goods vehicles) and secondly what plans does the Government have regarding Tai Po Road? There are rumours that a roundabout will be built at the entrance to Caldecott Road (which now has newly erected black-spot signs) and I notice that there has been some drilling along Tai Po Road in connection with the Route 16 (Kowloon West to Sha Tin) project.
Is this going to involve Tai Po Road as well? If it is and container vehicles continue to use the road then it is inevitable that more people are going to die.
