CONTRACTORS building a bridge to link the Tung Chung new town on Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok airport appeared in Eastern Court yesterday for allegedly dumping dredged mud at sea without a licence.

The subject of the Environmental Protection Department summons is a joint venture between Shui On Civil Contractors and China Harbour Engineering, which faces a maximum fine of $5,000.

Shui On-China Harbour Joint Venture allegedly offloaded marine mud in the water near Tung Chung on September 14 last year, during construction of a 290-metre-long concrete bridge.

The link will allow residents to get to the new airport without making a lengthy detour on the North Lantau Expressway. The foundation work is due to be completed in a month.

Yesterday, before magistrate Yung Yiu-wing, the joint venture, represented by defence attorney Jerome Matthews, pleaded not guilty to breaching the Dumping at Sea Act 1974.

The trial will take place on August 3.
