FAIRY tales happen. Clouds are silver lined. Cupid, contrary to rumour, is alive and well and living in Hong Kong. Six months ago we published the story of 29-year-old Joseph Ng Kai-ming's attempt to restart his life in Hong Kong after nine years in jail. It was a tale of unmitigated gloom: Joseph found himself in a city he did not recognise, containing gadgets he didn't know how to work, without friends, flat, cash or self-esteem. Worst of all he couldn't find his lifelong sweetheart. 'I'm desperate,' he said 'The apartment where we lived has gone, her mother's home has gone, I don't know whether she is alive or dead.' Within 12 days he went back to crime and, inevitably, jail. While most people reacted to the story with sympathy, one person reacted with a scream. 'She was on a bus,' said Joseph, 'when this guy lifted his Sunday magazine and there was my face staring at her.' When Joseph's former lover asked the stranger to translate the story, she discovered Joseph had already bought her wedding ring. 'As engagements go, it was pretty unusual,' Joseph admits. The couple were married in April and both now live in Tsing Yi.
