REBEL lawyers are set to be defeated in today's Law Society Council election unless there is a massive show of force by their supporters.
Yolanda Fan Pui-lan, spokesman for the Solicitors' Concern Group - formed by rebel lawyers after they failed to overturn the council's endorsement of the Government's Court of Final Appeal bill - said the group's candidates had far fewer proxy votes than those backed by the council's core members.
'We've got only about 70 proxy votes while our opposition has more than 400,' Ms Fan said.
It would be very difficult, if not impossible, for the group to win seats on the council, she said.
Ms Fan, 32, with Thomas Tse Lin-chung, 30, are contesting two of the nine seats for which there are a total of 13 candidates.
She said only a miracle would save them from defeat and their only chance lay in massive show of young lawyers at today's election.
