A GAMBLER who admitted beating his friend's lover to death with two wine bottles following a row over a $32,000 debt was yesterday cleared of murder. Yu Wing-sze, 35, was jailed for 10 years after a High Court jury convicted him of manslaughter. Mr Justice Duffy said he assumed the jury had convicted Yu of manslaughter on the grounds of provocation. But the judge said it was a 'brutal killing' and in his view the provocation was minimal. During a savage attack, Yu rained down more than 10 blows on housewife Chan Pui-fong, 35, hitting her so hard that both bottles shattered. Yu, a driver, said that on April 22 last year he had gone to collect money owed by Chan's boyfriend, Leung Chi-wai. But Chan had refused to pay up because she had discovered Leung, 36, was squandering their housekeeping on a concubine across the border. Yu said when he slapped Chan she screamed rape and became hysterical. He panicked and picked up a wine bottle which he smashed over her. When she continued to yell he grabbed a second bottle and hit her repeatedly about the head. Chan was discovered lying unconscious in a pool of blood in the bedroom of her Sha Tin home. She died in a coma nine days later.
