DOES the Governor have any real idea of how serious Hong Kong's traffic problems are? I only ask, having seen the severe disruption that occurred last Friday, at 6.30pm, around the Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay areas of Hong Kong Island. Whilst there were many of 'Asia's finest traffic police' on duty at all the major junctions, they were actually holding up the normal flow of traffic to allow the smooth and swift passage of a cortege of vehicles led and flanked by outriders.
Whether it was the Governor, Lu Ping or some other visiting VIP is probably irrelevant. What bothers me is that at the moment of maximum traffic volume (that is, Friday evening rush-hour), during a normal week, thankfully it wasn't raining, the ordinary people of Hong Kong were being unduly delayed in their passage by a VIP blissfully unaware of the problems we usually face.
If then this same dignitary is also responsible, ultimately, for getting an overall improvement to the horrendous traffic problems in Hong Kong, I can't help thinking that a somewhat blind view has been obtained, leading to the opinion that there is no great urgency required.
