RETAILER Chaifa Holdings plans to expand its brand-name products in an effort to increase its market share in China. The company has held the exclusive rights to design, manufacture, advertise, sell and distribute clothes, shoes and accessories under the Playboy brand name in Hong Kong, Macau and China since 1990. The licence has been extended to December 2004 under the existing terms and Playboy Entertainment International has agreed in principle to extend it to 2014. By the end of last year, products with the Playboy brand name accounted for more than 90 per cent of the company's turnover. Last year, Chaifa gained the exclusive licence to design, manufacture and distribute clothes and accessories under the Garfield name. This has allowed the company to lower the risk of over-dependence on a single brand name. Garfield children's wear and accessories were launched in March, so its contribution will be realised this year and next. Chaifa is also currently discussing licences for two more brand names. The number of outlets in China has grown from one in 1986 to 210. That number is likely to exceed 300 by the end of the year.
