POLICE look set to allow a sergeant acquitted of accepting a bribe from an illegal immigrant but suspected of neglect of duty to return to work.
The force has not brought disciplinary proceedings against the Police Tactical Unit officer, who would have faced dismissal if evidence could have been presented showing serious neglect of duty.
However, the woman - who testified in March at the sergeant's trial on charges that she gave him $3,000 not to report her illegal status - has just returned to the mainland.
Although the sergeant was acquitted, police still wanted to initiate a series of departmental charges.
These would have related to alleged neglect of duty, failing properly to account for movements and other similar book-keeping offences - all dependent on the mainlander's verbal evidence.
But, because the officer was acquitted, and amid concerns of double jeopardy, her court testimony could not be re-used.
