$35m win for $1,080 stake
THERE'S one very happy punter somewhere on Cheung Chau.
The Jockey Club yesterday released details of the winning $5 ticket on Wednesday's Triple Trio which paid a dividend of over $70 million to a $10 unit.
The Cheung Chau punter scooped half the $70 million with the remaining $35 million carried forward to Wednesday night.
He did so by outlaying $1,080 in a cash wager at the Cheung Chau off-course betting centre and then sat back to watch his bet scramble home by a head in the second leg of the Triple Trio.
The bet involves selecting the first three in any order in races three, four and six.
'He has registered his bet with us and we are processing payment now,' said the Jockey Club information secretary Wilson Cheung yesterday. 'All we know is that he's a local man who made his bet in cash on Cheung Chau.' The punter took one banker with four selections in each race for a unit $5 stake and a total outlay of $1,080.
He cleared the first hurdle with consummate ease, banking the runner-up Jollity, with the winner Happy Runner, the third Adamant, the fourth Sunday Cruise and the unplaced favourite Admiralty Fortune.
His real nail-biter came in the fourth where his banker Rambo duly obliged from Drifting Away as Wang Tak Supreme held Equine Supremo by a head for third. Equine Supremo, the hot favourite, did not feature in his selections and was in front with 100 metres to run.
It was plain sailing in the final leg as his banker Happy Occasions won and other selections Chalky Boat, Action Time, Mighty Mighty and Namjong ran second, third, fourth and sixth.
