A NEW scheme to help mainland authorities enforce copyright laws could help Hong Kong's piracy problems, say music industry experts.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said it may soon be helping mainland authorities combat the manufacture and distribution of pirated discs.
In meetings with mainland officials this week, it offered to send specialists to Beijing to help the Chinese Government enforce new laws controlling the copyright of compact discs.
Regional director for the federation, Giouw Jui-chian, said authorities were enthused by the offer, saying they needed additional resources to fight the problem.
'We have offered our people to them in terms of technology, enforcement, manpower, whatever we can do to speed up operations on controlling pirated discs,' he said.
'Enhancement of these operations will greatly help stem the flow of pirated CDs into Hong Kong and other countries. With the Hong Kong and Shenzhen authorities working together also, Hong Kong should be able to keep the problem under control.' Mr Giouw said there had been a dramatic decrease in pirated discs coming into the territory in recent months.
