Until May 26, only nine counterfeit coins were found since the coin was released in November.

Sources told the Post the figure had jumped to 59 by the end of May. All the fakes were detected by bank employees, collected mainly from public transport.

A spokesman for China Motor Bus said: 'It's difficult to tell the counterfeit coin from its appearance. Our drivers have no chance to identify the fakes, because they are busy with other matters.' Of the two batches of fakes found, one was made of two metals, making it remarkably similar to the real thing. The other was made from one metal, with the central part painted gold.
