A GROUP of frustrated divers armed with spear guns and knives launched a shark hunt off the coast of Sai Kung yesterday despite government warnings the move could put swimmers in greater danger.
The hunt was sparked by the Government's decision this week not to launch an official search for the shark that has claimed the lives of two men in the past week.
Hong Kong Scuba Centre's course director Paddy Wan Wiu-cheung said the 10 divers, mostly instructors, acted to protect their businesses, which were severely affected by the attacks.
'When we heard that the Government had failed to take action we thought we should solve the problem,' Mr Wan said.
Diving centres lost a lot of business after two fatal shark attacks in 1993, he said.
Mr Wan said the same was set to happen after Herman Lo Cheuk-yuet, 29, and Tso Kam-sun, 44, were killed in shark attacks at Sheung Sz Wan and Silverstrand last week.
