I refer to the letter written by Ms Deborah Hicks, of Happy Valley, which appeared in the South China Morning Post, May 31.

Our company contractor is presently carrying out trenching work in the Link Road/Broadwood Road area for the purpose of laying cables to reinforce the electricity supply in the area.

Our excavation work was started on May 24 on the pavement mentioned in Ms Hicks' letter.

Unfortunately, this same pavement was also excavated and reinstated by another utility just about two weeks before our work began.

As for the noise from jackhammers used in breaking up the concrete on the road, our contractor is only allowed to use this equipment in the daytime on weekdays.

Regarding the suggestion of using paving blocks for the pavements, we will need to refer this matter to the Highways Department which is responsible for all road construction in Hong Kong.
