I RECALL reading a news story in the South China Morning Post, about 11 years ago, which reported that within two years, all districts in the New Territories would be allocated proper postal addresses and there would be mail deliveries.
When I moved into the New Territories, all utilities were pretty bad. Phone lines were disrupted at the slightest hint of rain, now it is so good, our lines even withstood last year's typhoon. The electricity used to break down quite often, and candles were always on hand. Now we no longer need candles.
The water supply, which used to be erratic, is now quite dependable. Alas, there is still no postal service.
Many years ago I queried the Yuen Long postmaster when we would get this postal service. He said that it was up to the district office, together with the helpful suggestion we could open a post office box.
However, I have found that the opening of a post office box does not serve all my postal needs.
Overseas friends and associates and myself find it difficult to understand why here in hi-tech Hong Kong, some residents are still without this basic service.
