BUSINESSMAN Norman Chan Shui-tim will not seek re-election as chairman of the Hong Kong Basketball Association when his term of office comes to an end next month.

The amiable Chan, who was hospitalised by a stomach ulcer several months ago, said poor health and lack of time because of business commitments had prompted him to step down from his position.

'I've not been in good health recently and basketball has taken up too much of my time,' said the 45-year-old.

'It's time for me to step down and let someone with new ideas take over.' Chan was behind the move to increase the number of foreign professionals to three players in a team after he took office in 1991.

This raised the image of the sport and created a mini boom as fans, who had kept away from domestic games due to their poor standard, started filling the stadiums.
