CHINA Resources Enterprise (CRE) will focus on expanding its beer market in in the northeast and expects production to reach one million tonnes within five years.

The group said expansion would be supported by the acquisition of local beer companies in places such as Dalian and Shenyang.

Chairman Zhu Youlan said CRE would concentrate in the northeast because its Snowflake Brewery Group was in Shenyang.

'It is easier to expand in the area first. To occupy the market in that area is very important,' she said.

Ms Zhu predicted growth for Snowflake beer this year because demand in the region far exceeded supply.

Snowflake was the market leader in the region but 'in the whole country, we are still behind Tsingtao,' she said.

Last year, the group joined South African Breweries in a joint venture to expand its brewing in China.
