Wang Xinhua, Shenzhen government spokesman, also acknowledged that a shooting incident had taken place before the kidnapping of Chen Xianxuan, a Guangdong entrepreneur in his late 30s.

'This is a prolonged debt dispute between two companies. The two parties have failed to keep calm and [somebody] has adopted a comparatively strong approach [to settle the issue],' Mr Wang said.

He said the Government would continue to investigate and the parties involved were still in Shenzhen.

According to Mr Chen's driver, Lin Yong, the businessman was taken away by about five men at Shenzhen's Xiangmihu Golf Course on Saturday afternoon.

'I drove Mr Chen to the golf course around 4 pm. And I heard gunshots soon after I dropped him in front of the golf course and was about to park the car,' Mr Lin said.
