GUANGDONG police have cracked the largest drug-smuggling case in the province since 1949, capturing 12 drug traffickers and seizing 159.25 kilograms of heroin. Xinhua (the New China News Agency) reported last night the Haizhu district police sub-station in Guangzhou had seized a batch of heroin earlier this month, during a province-wide anti-drug operation. After 21 days of further investigation with help from their colleagues in Yunnan province, the Guangdong police successfully cracked the drug smuggling case, the agency said. The drugs were to be sold overseas after going through different Chinese cities. Xinhua said the drug runners were being 'manipulated' by a drug ring in the Golden Triangle. The 12 suspects included ethnic Chinese from outside the mainland, it said. In the past month, large numbers of drug cases have also been reported in other provinces including Yunnan and Guangxi.
