AN expatriate police officer was punched to the ground and smashed over the head with a beer bottle in a Lan Kwai Fong bar early yesterday. The 28-year-old inspector, believed to be from the Police Tactical Unit, had been drinking with colleagues when he was assaulted by two men in the Berlin Club at about 1.45 am. The incident occurred while he was drinking alone just after his friends had left. He was said to have been approached by two local Chinese men, aged 23 and 24. An argument was believed to have broken out during which the officer was punched to the ground. The fracas went on for several minutes before one of the inspector's drinking friends returned to the bar and broke up the fight. He called for help and the two men were later arrested outside another bar in the area. The two men and the officer were taken to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment before returning to Hollywood Road police station for questioning. Police said the incident was sparked by an earlier row between the two men and the group of tactical unit officers. The inspector sustained bruising to the right side of his face and head and injuries to his back and shoulder. The two arrested men were released on $2,000 police bail last night.
