AN 85-year-old woman may be forced to live on congee and chilli sauce for a week after her $2,000 savings were stolen yesterday.
A man stole from Law Choy-ting, who has lived on welfare for more than 20 years, in her fifth-floor flat in Block 16, Shek Lei Estate, Kwai Chung.
Ms Law, who has a cataract, has lived alone for years since her husband left her.
At 9 am yesterday, as she was having breakfast, the man knocked on her door.
'He did not show me any identification. He just asked me whether I had been to the market,' she said.
'I thought he was a good man so I let him in and gave him a cup of tea. But he stole my savings, including my coffin money. He's cold-blooded.' She left her handbag, containing the cash, in the sitting room when she went into the kitchen. 'A bundle of money - about $2,000 - went missing. He did not leave a cent for me.' Ms Law said she was glad she had paid her rent of about $350 and the electricity and water bills, and bought a bag of rice on Monday.
