BAHRAIN'S Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) has made a good start this year with the number of vessels repaired in the first quarter rising to 34, an increase of about 36 per cent on the first quarter of last year.

This follows an impressive 18 per cent increase in ship repair revenue to US$66.5 million last year.

Ship repair revenue increased by a further 10 per cent in the first quarter of 1995 and dock occupancy was at a high level.

'Owners of product carriers, LPG and chemical carriers, bulk carriers, ro-ro and container carriers and general cargo vessels are now taking advantage of the flexibility provided by ASRY's two floating docks,' a company official said.

These accommodate ships up to 120,000 dwt (dead weight ton) and 80,000 dwt and complement ASRY's 500,000 dwt graving dock.

Dock throughput of vessels in these categories more than doubled in the period.
