HONG KONG tennis faces a make-or-break situation when the men's team take on Taiwan in a Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group One survival match in September with the losers being demoted.

Team manager David Ho Wai-tak acknowledged it will be important for Hong Kong to win the Victoria Park home tie otherwise it could be years before the territory regains Group One status.

'It's make or break for us, a defeat would send us into limbo,' Ho said.

'It is important for us to maintain our present status because it would be very difficult to get back to Group One once we are demoted.

'I don't want to see Hong Kong dropping down to Group Three in another two years.

'We would have an equally tough time in Group Two against teams like Malaysia, Thailand, China and the Middle East countries.' Hong Kong got into their drastic position following defeats by powerhouses India, demotees from the World Group, and Japan in matches earlier this year.

Major changes in the Hong Kong squad have seen number one Michael Walker returning to Britain and old stalwarts Mark Bailey and Colin Grant stepping down.
