THE planned extension to the Convention and Exhibition Centre will meet the demand for larger facilities in Hong Kong, says a Hong Kong Trade Development Council official.

Council deputy executive director Frederick Lam said at yesterday's opening of the 16th International Machinery and Materials Exhibition for Asia the extension would more than double exhibition space at the centre when completed in 1977.

He said the centre's 'unique location on Victoria Harbour' would allow it to continue to host Asia's most spectacular conferences and exhibitions.

Mr Lam said industrial machinery and electrical component industries were no less significant than other industries although they might not attract the same glamour as fashion and toys.

The exhibition, featuring the most up-to-date machinery products and technology worldwide, will continue at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre till Monday.
