A CAMPAIGN manager was found guilty yesterday of falsely accusing a rival candidate during last year's district board elections of trying to buy votes with cakes.
Lam Fai-lun, 28, the husband of defeated district board candidate Monnie Chan Yui-hung, said outside court he feared the magistrate's decision would cause confusion in the territory's electoral system.
The matter went back to last September when Lam was campaigning for his wife in the Lek Yuen constituency, Sha Tin. He put up posters alleging Tony Kan Chung-nin gave cakes to voters and residents' organisations in an attempt to buy votes.
Mr Kan, who was standing for re-election, won the seat.
Sha Tin magistrate Kevin Ball said the claim made by Lam, with the signatures of 'a group of angry residents', was unfounded.
The magistrate said yesterday Mr Kan, in serving his first term on the district board, needed to maintain a good relationship with mutual aid groups to help him carry out his duties. Mr Kan had given cakes and sweets to Lek Yuen residents and the elderly for years during festivals, but the donations had been stopped during the election period between June and September last year.
