RESTAURANTS have been given the chance to prove sewage charges are too high due to strict government rules.

The offer was made after 3,000 employees from the trade took to the street to vent their anger over the charges.

The protesters said the levy doubled operating costs and would lead to massive sackings as employers sought to reduce costs.

Waving banners and chanting slogans, the group marched on the Central Government Offices to present a black box to officials in protest against the lack of consultation.

They claimed government standards on the discharge factor and pollution levels were too harsh, and demanded the scheme be frozen immediately.

A government spokesman said last night the industry could commission its own study if it thought standards were unreasonable.
