THE Urban Council plans to seek compensation from the Government for losses incurred at Lai Chi Kok Park, through which the Western Kowloon Railway will run.
The council's standing committee will also consider putting in a formal complaint to the ombudsman.
The council says it was given insufficient notice of plans for a passenger and freight railway station, which will take up land originally earmarked for the park. As a result, it says, it has spent large sums on work to develop leisure facilities that may now have to be scaled back.
Last December, the Executive Council approved the station project on land set aside for stage two of the 20-hectare park. Piling work, costing $4 million, for a squash centre and cafe has been carried out there.
Urban Councillor Ambrose Cheung Wing-sum said the council's recreation select committee would urge the Government to put the station underground. In the meantime, it would build 'basic facilities' costing $30 million to $40 million.
The Government's final decision could take months or years. The more ambitious second-stage works, including the squash centre, tennis courts and a sunken amphitheatre, would now be made part of the third stage.
