THE Joint Liaison Group was asked yesterday to consider whether the Hong Kong Red Cross ought to become a branch of the mainland organisation or an independent body after 1997.

The question was raised during discussion of the Red Cross Ordinance by the Preliminary Working Committee legal sub-group.

Local convenor of the sub-group Simon Li Fook-sean said Red Cross funds had come from Hong Kong people's donations.

He did not believe China would confiscate any of these funds. But a decision had to be made because the Hong Kong Red Cross would not be able to continue as a branch of the British headquarters after 1997.
