MALAYSIA could become the first country to break the United Nations arms embargo on Bosnia, after joining a call by Islamic countries for Bosnians to be allowed the 'means for self-defence'.

Eight foreign ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), meeting in Geneva, described the arms embargo as 'illegal and unjust'.

Expressing support for the OIC stand, Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Kuala Lumpur would ignore the embargo.

'We will sell [weapons to the Bosnians],' he said.

The Prime Minister said that by denying arms to the Bosnian Government, the UN and NATO were allowing them to be slaughtered.

'While NATO and the UN forbid the supply of arms to all parties, the Serbs are being supplied with weapons and oil to attack the Bosnians,' he said.
