IT was a weekend that will live long in sporting memory. Three of the world's most prestigious trophies were bestowed and each carried its own tale of pathos.

Spain's Miguel Indurain took his place in the pantheon of cycling legends when he became the first to lift five consecutive Tour de France titles - a win that will be overshadowed by the death of Fabio Casartelli, who crashed on a descent in the Pyrenees.

Across the channel, American John Daly completed his recovery from the golfing wilderness as he kept his nerve to defeat Italian Costantino Rocca in a four-hole play-off for the coveted British Open trophy at the home of the game, St Andrews.

And in Montevideo, Uruguay returned to soccer's elite band as they beat World Cup holders Brazil in a thrilling penalty shoot-out to lift the Copa America title.

Indurain's reign as king of the Tour de France may be set to run and run, according to the riders whose record of five victories he equalled.

Belgian Eddy Merckx and France's Bernard Hinault, along with the late Jacques Anquetil the only other riders to have won the Tour five times, both said the 31-year-old Spaniard could add at least another Tour or two to his tally.

'I think he's set for a sixth or even a seventh Tour win,' said Merckx.
