LEARNING through activity and inquiry is essential in the study of science, the Director of Education, Lam Woon-kwong, told students.

Mr Lam was addressing the 28th Joint School Science Exhibition, held recently at the Hong Kong Science Museum. Students from Hong Kong, Tianjin (China), Taipei (Taiwan) and Quezon City (the Philippines) took part.

He said the students had done precisely this - querying and experimenting - to present their exhibition.

'They collected the information themselves, identified problems, set up and conducted their own experiments, made their own analyses and reported their findings in the form of exhibits,' Mr Lam said.

Exploring the realms of science through activity and inquiry gave students crucial first-hand experience, the director said.

The theme of this year's exhibition was 'Utopian Trip'. Students demonstrated how science and technology could help to make this a better and more efficient world to live in.

'The annual exhibition has become a major science education event in Hong Kong,' Mr Lam said. 'It stimulates public interest in science, encourages the pursuit of knowledge among students, and promotes sharing between schools.' The exhibition chairman, Lau Shui-kit, said the exhibits were 'exciting and imaginative'.
