LEADING barrister Martin Lee Chu-ming said in the United States last night that he would tell the whole truth about Hong Kong's future rule of law when he received a major human rights award.
Mr Lee, chairman of the Democratic Party, was selected for this year's International Human Rights Award by the American Bar Association for his fierce opposition to the Sino-British deal on the Court of Final Appeal.
Speaking in Chicago two hours before the presentation, he said he had yet to decide what message he would be giving the leading US lawyers.
'I was given the award because of my contribution to the rule of law, in particular, the fight for getting the right Court of Final Appeal. Certainly, I'll talk about the rule of law.
'I will tell the truth, nothing but the truth. I can't think why the truth can't be told,' he said.
However, in a letter to Dr David Hayes, executive director of the American Bar Association, shortly after the award was announced, Governor Chris Patten said Mr Lee was wrong in his campaign against the court deal. He warned that Mr Lee's 'misguided' views would send the wrong message around the world that the territory's rule of law was doomed.
