THE territory's compulsory education policy has failed to impress David Tang Yue-tan of Wah Yan College (Kowloon), who scored 10 As in this year's HKCEE.

The Form Five graduate said even though the concept of general education was advocated by ancient Chinese philosopher, Confucius, the compulsory education system as it existed in Hong Kong was a 'waste of resources.

'General education in Hong Kong involves spoon-feeding the students rather than teaching them,' the 17-year-old student said.

Although David does consider himself a beneficiary of the policy, he said the system was a burden for students who did not enjoy studying.

Agreeing with the renowned May 4th Movement writer, Lu Hsin, David said students with different talents and abilities should not be treated in the same way just for the sake of equality.

'It deprives the more talented students of opportunities.

'I am not saying that students should be classified according to their academic performance, but rather, their enthusiasm for learning,' he explained.
