A RECORD number of women have registered their candidacy, but the number still represents about 10 per cent of the total nominations. By the close of nominations yesterday, a total of 15 women had joined the 123 male candidates to bid for the 60 seats up for grabs. Only seven were candidates in the 1991 election. There were five and four in 1988 and 1985 respectively. In the hotly contested Community, Social and Personal Services functional constituency seat, former secretary for health and welfare Elizabeth Wong Chien Chi-lien will fight four male rivals for votes. In Kowloon Southwest, lawyer Helen Chung Yee-fong is challenging three male candidates. The only seat with two female contenders is Hong Kong Island Central, where Peggy Lam Pei Yu-dja is challenged by Christine Loh Kung-wai in the geographical seat. One hundred out of the 138 candidates are below 50 years of age.
